87% of time spent on mobile is on Apps

Of the total non-voice time spent by users on Mobile, 87% is on Apps. Mobile web is 13%. Ease of use, offline functionality, one-click access from the home screen, and push notifications are some of the several reasons for this heavy tilt toward apps.

66% of all digital media time is spent on Mobile

Desktop web accounts for only 32% of digital media time spent by users. These are the US numbers. When it comes to highly mobile-penetrated countries like India where many people own smartphones but not a desktop, the trend is even more skewed toward mobile.

2hrs is the average time spent by users on Mobile per day

This chart shows the time spent by users by age per month. Young users use more often, but the elder users who adopt smartphones also contribute substantially.

35% of apps are discovered by referrals and word-of-mouth

App stores and advertising contribute almost equally to the remaining discovery. App store discovery is mainly by keyword search and featuring in specific sections. Also, be aware that the 35% attributed to referrals and word of mouth includes the recommendation articles and reviews done by popular media publications and blogs.

50% of smartphone users have a shopping app

50% of smartphone users install one or more apps from their favorite e-commerce providers. This is the big m-commerce push. These apps have the capability to engage users with the up to date product info, promotional offers, and seasonal sales.

Users install between 5 and 20 apps per month

Though Surprisingly, 25% of users install 18 apps per month. In new and growing markets like India, the numbers are on the higher side.

Conclusion

  1. Globally users spend most of their digital time on Mobiles and most of it is spent on Apps and not mobile web. If you are looking for loyalty and engagement, an app is a very powerful tool for your brand.
